Caselli was travelling at over 100 MPH in his Volvo with a blood alcohol level of .18 (over twice the legal limit). Tests also showed that he had cocaine in his system at the time of the accident. The force of the impact launched Boynton's SUV 30 feet into the air and ejected him from the vehicle, according to Deputy District Attorney Jason Baez of the OCDA's Homicide unit. Boynton died at the scene.
Caselli, represented by Paul Meyer (who was also defense counsel for Ladera Ranch Child Molester Jeffrey Ray Neilsen), pled guilty in May of this year. At that hearing, the victim's family members implored the judge to hand down the maximum sentence of 10 years.
At the time of the defendant's guilty plea, the family and friends of Boynton made victim impact statements to the court expressing how much they loved and missed the victim. Boynton's mother and two sisters explained that the victim was the rock and glue of their family and now there was a huge void that can never be filled.
Caselli will likely serve only half of the sentence if he behaves in prison.
