Chris and Lori Coble, of Ladera Ranch were featured on Oprah Show on Monday, October 25 to tell their incredible story of horrific tragedy and miraculous triumph and their efforts to improve traffic safety in California. The show was probably the best Oprah has ever featured. Oddly, however, the show edited out the part at the end of the show where the Cobles were sharply critical of Caltrans.

Details will be reported in the November Ladera Times, distributed on Thursday. November 4. In the meantime, click on the Coble News Diary for prior news on this ongoing story. Also, if you want to help the Cobles in their fight to make California highways safer, go to www.coblekids.com.

VIA WIRE SERVICE -- A Ladera Ranch man who heads a Rancho Cucamonga furniture business was charged Monday in Los Angeles with hiring undocumented foreign-born workers.

Rick M. Vartanian, 57, of Ladera Ranch, president and primary shareholder of Brownwood Furniture, is charged in a criminal information with obstruction of justice and a misdemeanor count of continuing to employ unauthorized workers, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

According to ICE, Vartanian told investigators that unauthorized workers identified during an earlier immigration audit were no longer employed by the company, when, in fact, the firm continued to employ 18 of those workers and had taken steps to shield them from detection.

Agents executed a search warrant at the company last December and discovered the 18 unauthorized employees still working there, ICE officials said.

Vartanian, who has already agreed to pay a $10,000 fine, faces a maximum sentence of 66 months in federal prison.

The charges against Vartanian come less than three weeks after the filing of charges against Brownwood Furniture's vice president, Michael Patrick Eberly.

The 48-year-old Alta Loma resident is charged in a criminal information with a misdemeanor count of continuing employment of unauthorized workers, according to ICE. According to the charging document, Eberly knew that many of the furniture company's workers were unauthorized and continued to employ them.

bank_robbery-400.jpgTwo bank robbers, who witnesses describes as masked African-American assailants with no weapons entered Wells Fargo Bank in Bridgepark Plaza Wednesday afternoon at about 1:30PM.  According to reports, they gave verbal commands to bank workers and patrons and jumped over the teller wall to clear out the cash in their drawers.  Sheriff Lieutenant Mike Jansen said that the robbers did not attempt to access the bank's safe.

One of the subjects was reportedly wearing a ski mask, and the other was wearing a bandanna to cover his face.

Jansen also said that the Sheriff's response time from the initial call by a bank employee at 1:35 was under a minute.  Nonetheless, the assailants were gone, leaving behind a 1997 Honda that was reported stolen out of Los Angeles.

Deputies are coordinating their investigation with the FBI, which handles all bank robbery cases.

Many retail banks in Ladera Ranch have been robbed in recent years including Chase (formerly Washington Mutual), US Bank inside Pavilions, and Bank of America in Mercantile East.  Bank of America hired armed guards after the last robbery there.

Deputies are seeking input from anyone who may have been at Bridgepark Plaza yesterday before or during the time of the robbery.  If you have any information or observed the assailants, contact OCSD Suth Operations at (949)425-1800.
